Wilderness Cycle Trail

 Wilderness Trail 2020

On Tuesday morning the Year 7 and 8’s in Room 8 went on a bike ride. First we had to load the bikes onto the trailer, horse trailer, and the bike poles that you use on the back of your car. Once that was done we then came inside and had a talk. Ms Kemp wanted us to show her our rain coats. Then we were on our way to Milltown.

On the way to the cycle track we had to go through Hokitika then through Lake Kaniere which was beautiful. Once we got to Milltown Ms Kemp wanted Xavier, Jack, and I to unload the bikes and put them over the fence at the start of the bike trail. The other car groups started showing up. Once we put our bikes over the fence she told us to head into the shelter, until everyone was ready. Hamish and Charlie's dad had used a tandem.

In the first section, which was the worst section, there were a lot of uphills that were challenging. A couple people including me had to walk their bikes up the hill instead of bike the hill. Alex and I were at the back but we enjoyed it, kind of. The parents at the back with Alex and I were encouraging us which  kept us going. Once Alex and I reached the rest of the group at the first stop Ms Kemp had a little talk about not skidding on private property at Cowboys Paradise. A classmate  had done a skid because someone stopped right in front of them, and this guy came out and started swearing at him.

After the first stop we carried on. There were still a lot of uphills but even steeper. When we got to the top there was a swing bridge. Ms Kemp was saying, “The girls go first and the boys last.” Jack and I hate swing bridges and someone overheard us and started bouncing on their bike. After the swing bridge there was a little down hill. A couple of minutes after the down hill we had another stop.

Ms Kemp said, “Jack, Ethan, Cooper, Wyatt, and Alex are at the front.” I was happy because the ride in front was not crampy at all, and it was flat for about 5 minutes, which was good to practice our gear changes. Then there was an uphill, not too steep though. After that uphill most of the track was downhill and around two uphills.

There was a little corner where Wyatt fell off his bike because his tyres didn’t have enough tread which made him slip and fall off. I tried to stop but I had too much speed. Luckily Jack had stopped and helped him up and told him to wait for an adult. Meanwhile the other Jack and I were struggling to go up the uphills. Then there were alot of down hills that Jack and I were enjoying from all that effort we put into going up the hills.

The third stop was the second section where Wyatt, Alex, Nevey, Olive, and I pulled out because it was too much. Nevey’s pedal fell off heading down the hill to the second section.

Ms Kemp had a little talk to the parents saying, “You guys have to be more angrier than me.” She also said, “The people that overtook the people in the front does not show leadership.” On the way, passing all the bikers, Alex’s dad Waren was telling us how easy the second section was which made me angry a little bit.

Once the people that pulled out got to Kapitea Reservoir Wyatt told us he had to go to the toilet and once he had finished he told us to go and have a look. He said, “It's a long drop” which made us very uncomfortable to go and have a look. Once we stopped looking at the toilets Cooper wanted me to go with him to the toilet for some reason, but I didn’t.

The group that pulled out went near the water and started throwing/ skipping stones into the water. Cooper pulled a flower out of the ground and named it Jerimey, and there he threw it into the water saying he passed away from dehydration, and we started throwing stones at Jerimey.

My favourite part about this school journal was when the writer explains the team names. So the Allies had New Zealand, Australia, British, United States, and  Canada. The Axis had German, and Italy. The main reason why I liked this part was, it showed the countries of the world they had taken over.

Lake Daniells Tramp

 Lake Daniells Tramp

Lake Daniell is a tramp in the Southern Alps just past Springs Junction. The tramp is in the Lewis Pass. Before we left Ms Kemp was explaining the rules and what we would do if someone got hypothermia. The main rule was to leave no trace. What she meant was to leave the track how it was before we arrived. She also told the class not to wonder off the track because the beech forest all looks the same and it is very easy to get lost. After she explained the rules she got people into their car groups to head off.

Our car group had Jack, Xavier, Charlie, Ethan, and Ms Kemp. At the start of the car ride Charlie started I SPY. As the game went on we added maori words to it. Ms Kemp made a very hard one for Jack, Xavier and Ethan but Charlie got it really easily. Ethan made a hard one to but in english. It was a speaker. The clues he gave were… They are in cars, in houses, and on technology devices. When we got to Reefton they were hounding Ethan to give them the answer. Once we left Reefton they were still trying to get the answer but they couldn't so  they had given up. After the I Spy game Charlie asked to play music and Ms Kemp said yes. Charlie was vibing to the music and he had an imaginary guitar in his hand playing it.

Before we started the tramp Ms Kemp gave us each a number for the number off. A number off is a quick and easy way to make sure everyone was there.

The Lake Daniell walk was pretty boring, Although it got fun as we went on. When we set off we were moving at a great speed. As we went through the track people got a bit crazy by throwing moss at each other. Once we got to the first stop we had a check up. Once we carried on there was a whole pile of moss sitting on an edge of a drop that people had picked up. At stop two Ms Kemp changed who was in the front so we could keep a good speed. We got a drink and if we wanted to we could get a little snack to eat while walking. The third stop was one of the challenging stops. It was the part where most of the hills were and where the parents had to tell some of the kids to not stop walking to keep on going.

Once we got to the fourth stop we had another drink of water. When we left to keep on going we then reached a flat surface to walk along. About 30 minutes later we got to the Kōhanga Atawhai-Manson-Nicholls Hut. We had a stop and had some lunch. People were sitting on the deck next to the hut. Jack, Xavier, Ethan, and Ms Kemp were sitting at a picnic table. Once we had finished lunch Jack had brought his fishing rod so he went to go try and catch fish. The first cast was ok, it went out quite far out then the second cast got snagged, on something below the surface. But after many tries he got it unstuck but the line was tangled up so he cut the line and got Ms Kemp to retie the swivel back onto the line. The last cast was a failure the lure got snagged on the same thing that was under the surface then he was trying to get the lure unstuck but the line snapped and he didn't have any more swivels so he packed the fishing rod up and then the class got a picture at the hut then set back off to got to the cars.

Once finished at the hut we headed back onto the track. On the way back it was pretty quick but the classmates who were throwing moss at each other got a growling. So they had to be at the back with Ms Kemp and a parent in front of that line. When we finally got to the end some people went on a rope swing around the side of the track. When the others at the back came out we gave out a thank you to all the parents that helped with transport and on the walk. On the way back to school Ms Kemp decided to drop Xavier and Charlie at home. When we finally got to school Ethan and Jack grabbed their bags and headed off home.

Wild Boy by Brando Yelarich.

This Story was about a guy that wanted
to walk around the whole of New Zealand. My favourite part was when he was on Ninety Mile Beach.

horse was behind in a bush. Brando was concerned about what was outside so he went and had a look,
he had seen the horse he got even more concerned and went back inside his tent. Once he had woken
up to carry on he went outside and their was horse feces.

Heroes Last Summer

Heroes Last Summer Pauline Cartwright

My favourite part of this story was when the kids explained how to play
a game called HE. You had to play with a tin can the person who's
in is the HE they have to count to a hundred and the others
have to hide. While HE is looking for someone, someone can run out before
they’re spotted and they can kick the can and yell and run off to another hiding spot.

We cry or fly to fish heaven

Painful plastic in our stomachs

The ocean’s a stage for plastic

A quarter of ngå ika are dead

The Ugly Duckling Reading Challenge

Graphic Novel - read one of the graphic novels from the selection provided. Write a paragraph about  your favourite part.
The Ugly Duckling Written by Hans Christian Andersen.

My favourite part of this graphic novel was when
this old man picked him up from a frozen lake and took
the duck to his house with two children.
The children ended up taking the
duck next to a fire to warm up.
Once he had warmed up the children were happy but the
duck got scared and tried flying and made a huge mess in the house.
Then an old lady
came and asked who made this mess and from the picture it
looked like the kids were pointing at the duck. Then the lady wacked him out
of the house.

Matariki Star

This week our class made stars for Matariki. To make this star we needed to cut out a circle out of cardboard. Then we had used a protractor to find 30 centimetres. Then we had done added half a centre metre out from the 30 centre metre line we added with the protractor. then we cut to the half centre metre. Once we had done that we taped string to the centre of the our circle and wrapped the string around the cuts.

Beach Cookout

On Wednesday room 8 went to the beach behind the Marist rugby ground. We went to the beach for a cook out to fill in our out door activities and to have a good lunch. My group had Breeana, Lily, Nevaeh and me of course. Our group made burgers and smoors for the dessert. To build the fire we needed to collect tinder and kindling. For our group it was easy to find kindling and tinder. To get our kindling and tinder there was a bunch of sticks behind our group. When we went over there and collected the stuff we were able to start our fire. We used matches to start our fire. I brought the meat patties, salt and cooking oil. Lily brought the buns and the precooked chips as well as the frying pan. Nevey brought the marshmellows and the biscuits. Breeana brought chocolate and plastic plates. Our lunch was great, I would definitely have it again. Our adult that had helped us was Kelly Shaw, Lily's mum.

could lead you to where someone is injured and lost.

Man And The Sea
While reading this text I learnt that if you had a dad that had passed
away back in the 1800’s for the Maori culture that you would have
to become the man of house to make money for the family.

Family Meal

For my family meal I have made us homemade raps.

Thursday 16 April 2020

Nutella Pockets.

In the kitchen today I have mad nutella pockets.
The ingredients I used were nutella and bread.

Healthiness of the ingredients I would say 3/10 because nutella isn't that healthy white bread isn't that healthy because it hasnt got as much fiber or protein like the other breads because they take most of the grain out.

Overall cost of the manufacturer. For the bread an average two dollars. nutella four dollars. I would give a 7 because it's cheap.

Presentation I would say 3 It doesn't look good until you take a bite.

Ease of handling its really really easy to make. All you need is a fork nutella and bread.

Taste is a 10 something I would make again.
